Cartoons are framings of time - there are many ways that time is modified when the panels of a cartoon are offered in "nonstandard ways". For instance the gutters in between panels are traditionally used as blank indications of the passage of time. If they become crowded with patterns and forms, they suggest multiple layers of time - the passage or duration of which are relative to one another.
